We have countless compliments about them. Seriously, every day! The plaques are vintage place mats I picked up at a 'table top' sale in Nantwich, years ago. Lots of customers have asked me to make one for them over the years- which I have done on some occasions. The hardest bit is getting hold of the cotton reels- they've increased in price on eBay lately...
Step 2. Sand the edges to soften the corners and sides. I just used sandpaper, not a fancy electric sander.
Step 3. Stain the wood- I used varnish for half of the boards and left half pale.
(Of course, if you are lucky and can find some plaques or wood that's already the right size then you can skip those first three steps)
Step 5 (Below). Choose screws 1-2cm longer than each cotton reel. Standard Sylko reels (green pictured below) take a 4.0x45mm screw.
Two of the four I made for this DIY are for a customer, but the other two (below) are available on my online shop for those of you who can't find the cotton reels, or just don't have the time.
