What was the first 'bird in hat' that you drew?
A Barn Owl in a Baseball Cap! He's not a print or card or anything (he's around five years old now!) but you can see him if you scroll down to the very beginning of my blog. I'd drawn his head a little too big so I popped a cap on him as a joke and got a bit carried away..
As a London resident, are you still proud of your Midlands roots?
Yes, very! I'm constantly asking (in vain) to be called a 'midlandser', rather than a northerner. Almost all my family are from Derby, Stoke or Birmingham so I'm about as Midlands as it gets. It's so relaxing when I get a chance to visit my family, there's a much higher quality of birds in my parents garden than mine.
If you could only eat 1 fruit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Oooh that's tough. Pineapple at a push!
If you were a bird from one of your drawings, which one would you be?
Haha, the Blue Tit in the Umbrella Hat! I'm not as grumpy as him but I definitely identify with him on some level.
What piece of advice do you have for other self employed artists?
Hmm.. practically, 'start as you mean to go on'. Specifically in having an easy, intuitive accounting system before you need one, not after (and that's from first hand experience!)
and generally to make sure you have a healthy life/work balance, another thing I'm not always great at. I'm all for working into the nights occasionally but sometimes you need to work 'better' rather than just 'more' and you don't want to end up resenting the thing you love!
I totally agree with Alice's advice so I hope you find this useful and love Alice's birds as much as we do!
